From Playing for Change:

I know, it's cheesy, but I am a sucker for this international feel good stuff. I remember seeing the One World video when I was about thirteen. It was first exposure to reggae and 'world music' in general. When I listen to the lyrics, the combination of liberal-feel-good and Millenialism is awesome.

censorship I can get behind

from The Wall Street Journal:
Vincent Connare designed the ubiquitous, bubbly Comic Sans typeface, but he sympathizes with the world-wide movement to ban it.

Mr. Connare has looked on, alternately amused and mortified, as Comic Sans has spread from a software project at Microsoft Corp. 15 years ago to grade-school fliers and holiday newsletters, Disney ads and Beanie Baby tags, business emails, street signs, Bibles, porn sites, gravestones and hospital posters about bowel cancer.

Alma 22:18
O God, Aaron hath told me that there is a God; and if there is a God, and if thou art God, wilt thou make thyself known unto me, and I will give away all my sins to know thee, and that I may be raised from the dead, and be saved at the last day. And now when the king had said these words, he was struck aas if he were dead.

D&C 59:8
Thou shalt offer a asacrifice unto the Lord thy God in brighteousness, even that of a broken heart and a ccontrite spirit.

on Cheney

Exit Growling--Dick Cheney: The Visible Man

Repeatedly during Mr. Obama’s transition and his first 100 days in office, Mr. Cheney has carried his anemic favorability rating into the ring to slug it out with a successor who enjoys considerable public support on issues from the role of the vice presidency to his trademark issue of national security.

“Generally speaking Dick’s voice is probably not going to move the ball forward,” one prominent Republican, Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, said. Nonetheless, members of both parties say Mr. Cheney, with his tenacity and his insider’s knowledge of government and politics, continues to influence the Washington debate.

on the Bible:

David Plotz, Good Book:
My goal with the book is to convey all the weirdness, messiness, and humor that gets shortchanged when the Bible gets run through the expert mill.

the problem with ebooks

From The Social Dilemma of E-Reading:
Project Gutenberg, which has been digitizing works since 1971, contains thousands of books—all free (that's another issue) to copy, paste, e-mail, and reference at any hour, and, yet it hasn’t produced a worldwide conversation that explains the greatness of “Middlemarch” any better than a good English professor or an enthusiastic friend can.

Absolutely true.
It’s been said before, but I’ll say it again: books are sexy; electronic reading devices are not.
